NYC Congestion Pricing: Toll to Take Effect in Manhattan in 2024

Details of Proposed Toll Rates Revealed

Starting June 30, 2024, vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street will be subject to a toll.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced that it is on track to begin tolling drivers coming into Manhattan below 60th Street in May 2024. The Congestion Relief Zone will include all local streets and avenues at or below 60th Street, and officials estimate that the toll will result in 100,000 fewer vehicles entering the area.

The toll rates have yet to be finalized, but the MTA has released a proposal that would charge drivers $9-$23 to enter the Congestion Relief Zone during peak hours, which are weekdays from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Off-peak hours would have a reduced toll rate of $5-$17.

The MTA says that the congestion pricing program will generate revenue that will be used to improve the city's public transportation system. The funds will be used to support capital projects, such as new subway lines and buses, as well as operating costs.

Congestion pricing is a controversial policy that has been debated for years. Opponents argue that it will unfairly burden drivers and that it will do little to reduce traffic congestion. However, supporters of congestion pricing say that it is a necessary step to reduce traffic and improve air quality in Manhattan.
